9th HKBDFI Cup Ballroom Dance Championships

The 9th HKBDFI Cup Ballroom Dance Championships was originally organized on 29/3/2020.  Due to COVID-19 restrictions, I was forced to postpone this event five times to 14/6/20, 6/9/20, 22/11/20, 14/3/21 and eventually & luckily it was actually held on 19th May 2021.  Under HKSAR Government restrictions, all competitors had to wear their masks to dance. I wrote to the Health Department explaining that DanceSport was proved to be a highly exhausting & demanding sports. To wear mask during DanceSport competition may cause hazardous effects on athlete dancers. Still my request was not approved. Anyway that did not deter the hungry dancers to show their passions & talents in a normal setting competition in Hong Kong for more than one year!   Record entry of 207 Solo dancers (49 categories) and slightly less than normal 66 couples (35 categories) registered for this very long awaited competition at the TsimShaTsui Kaifong Welfare Association Hall on the Day of Buddha Festival in HK.

Of all the couples’ events, the most awaited & hard-fought event was definitely the  “Hong Kong Amateur Latin” & “Open Amateur Latin”.  With the withdrawal of the Italian couple Salvo Sinardi & Alexandra Kondrashova, Both Amateur Latin events were occupied with the same three Hong Kong young couples, with the results swopped between the three – very exciting.  The adjudicators who had done a good job in the last event of the day (Open Amateur Latin) were Lawrence Chan (Chief Adjudicator), Laura Zmajkovicova (Slovakia), Viktorija Horeva (Latvia), Anna Lisova (Italy), Alan Li (Macau) with other local judges Michel Wang, Ocean Vanderlely, Henry Yang, Sam Ng, Tsang Chi Kong, Choi Ting Fung, Henry Tse, Candy Li . 

The atmosphere & audience support on the day were electric. Thanks for all the working staff to keep the whole event run under hygienic & orderly situations within the HKSAR Government restrictions !
With upcoming uncertain circumstances, the 10th HKBDRFI Cup in March 2022 may change to a new name.
